1. Who is eligible to apply for an OCI card?
Individuals who were Indian citizens on or after 26 January 1950, or were eligible to become Indian citizens on that date, including their children and grandchildren, may apply.
Note: Citizens or former citizens of Pakistan or Bangladesh are not eligible for OCI.
2. Is a Renunciation Certificate required before applying for OCI?
Yes. If you previously held Indian citizenship, you must obtain a Renunciation or Surrender Certificate before applying for an OCI card.
3. Can foreign spouses of Indian citizens apply for OCI?
Yes. A foreign spouse of an Indian citizen or an OCI cardholder can apply, provided the marriage has been registered and has existed continuously for at least 2 years prior to the date of application.
4. Are minor children eligible for OCI?
Yes. Minor children are eligible if one or both parents are Indian citizens or OCI cardholders. A birth certificate and proof of parental citizenship must be submitted.
5. Are individuals with military background eligible for OCI?
No. Foreign nationals who are currently serving or have previously served in any foreign military force, including civilian roles in defence departments, are not eligible.

8. What documents are required for a fresh OCI application?
Key documents include:
Valid foreign passport
Proof of Indian origin (passport/certificate of parents or grandparents)

9. Can I apply for OCI from outside India?
Yes. You can apply at the Indian Mission/Post in your country of residence. In Kuwait, applications can be submitted through DU Digital Global ICAC with a prior appointment.
10. What is the processing time for a fresh OCI application?
Processing usually takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending on document verification and clearance. Applicants are notified by email/SMS, and the application status can be tracked through the OCI portal.
Conversion of PIO Card to OCI Card
The Government of India discontinued the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card Scheme and merged it with the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Scheme. Existing PIO Card holders are required to convert their valid PIO Cards into OCI Cards.
Applicants holding a valid PIO Card must submit an application for OCI Registration in lieu of a valid PIO Card through the prescribed online process and complete the document submission formalities.
Important Notes:
Conversion from PIO Card to OCI Card is not automatic.
Applicants must complete the online OCI registration process before submitting documents.
A valid foreign passport is mandatory at the time of application.
Existing PIO Card holders should complete the conversion process at the earliest.
As per the latest Government of India guidelines, valid PIO Cards remain acceptable for travel to India until 31 December 2025, subject to any future instructions issued by the Government of India or ICAO.
After the prescribed deadline, PIO Card holders who have not converted to OCI may be required to obtain an appropriate visa for travel to India.

Documents Checklist – OCI Registration in Lieu of Valid PIO Card
Applicants must submit:
Printed OCI application form generated after online registration.
Copy of the Online Registration Number/Application Reference Number.
Original and copy of the valid PIO Card.
Copy of the current valid foreign passport.
Recent passport-size photograph as per OCI specifications.
Proof of current residential address (if applicable).
Any additional supporting documents requested by the Embassy of India.
Important:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is it mandatory to convert a PIO Card to an OCI Card?
Yes. The Government of India phased out the PIO Scheme in 2015 and PIO Card holders are required to convert their PIO Cards into OCI Cards.
2. What is the deadline for PIO to OCI conversion?
The Government of India has extended the deadline for conversion of PIO Cards to OCI Cards until 31 December 2025.
3. Can I travel to India using my valid PIO Card?
Yes. Valid PIO Cards will continue to be accepted for entry into and exit from India until 31 December 2025, provided the holder also carries a valid foreign passport.
4. How do I apply for PIO to OCI conversion?
PIO Card holders must formally apply online for OCI Registration in lieu of Valid PIO Card through the OCI Services portal. After completing the online application, the application form may be printed along with the Online Registration Number and submitted with the required enclosures and fee.
5. Is there a fee for converting a PIO Card to an OCI Card?
Yes. The prescribed fee for conversion of a PIO Card into an OCI Card is KD 32.000.
6. What happens if I do not convert my PIO Card by the deadline?
PIO Card holders who do not convert their PIO Cards to OCI Cards by 31 December 2025 will be required to obtain a visa from the Indian Missions/Posts abroad for travel to India. Applicants already residing in India will be required to obtain the service of "New Visa" through the e-FRRO online portal.
7. Is the conversion of a PIO Card into an OCI Card automatic?
No. The conversion process is not automatic. PIO Card holders must submit a formal application for an OCI Card.
After acquiring foreign nationality, Indian citizens must surrender their Indian Passport immediately. They should not travel using their Indian Passport after obtaining foreign citizenship.
Under Section 12(1A) of the Passports Act, possession of an Indian Passport by a foreign national (including former Indian citizens who have acquired foreign nationality) is a cognizable offence.
